Chocolate Orange Brownies Recipe (1)

I absolutely love those little chocolate oranges and look forward to them each Christmas season.

Last week I had to bring a dessert to a little dinner we had with friends and I decided to experiment with the chocolate and orange combo.

These little brownies are seriously a match made in chocolate heaven. I dare say, they rank right up there, with any chocolate and peanut butter combo.

So for all those chocolate orange lovers, you will definitely have to give these a try.

What other flavor extracts could I use for this brownie recipe?

If you don’t love orange extract you could easily use a different flavor, such as:
-Mint
-Raspberry
-Cherry
-Almond
-Vanilla
-Strawberry
-Peppermint

You could easily use any extract, and make any flavor of brownie as you’d like. I personally love the chocolate orange for the Christmas holiday, but you could switch the flavor depending on the season.

Could I use essential oils instead of extract?

You most definitely could use essential oils, instead of flavored extracts. I would do a few drops at a time, and taste test, according to preference, depending on how strong you like your orange.

I personally prefer using extracts, and they are cheaper, but both would work.

Brownies:

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • cup cocoa powder
  • 4 eggs
  • cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Orange Frosting:

  • ¾ cup butter softened
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • teaspoons orange extract
  • red and yellow food coloring

Chocolate Ganache Topping:

  • cups semi-sweetchocolate chips
  • ¾ cup butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • In a bowl, beat together butter, sugar, and cocoa. Once it's completely mixed, add 4 eggs one at a time, mixing after each one.

  • Add flour, salt and vanilla and mix well. Spread on large (10x15x1 inch) greased cookie sheet or jelly roll pan.

  • Bake for 22-25 minutes and remove from oven once finished.

  • Let cool for 30-60 minutes (stick in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes to speed up the cooling process).

  • For the orange frosting, mix butter, milk, powdered sugar and extract. Add food coloring (I used about 10 drops of yellow and 3 drops of red to get my pale orange color).

  • Frost brownies and then put in freezer for another 20 minutes.

  • Melt chocolate chips and butter in the microwave and spread on top of the frosting layer.

  • Freeze another 20 minutes to set.

I know some of you girls are into Essential Oils, have you thought about using Wild Orange instead of the Orange Extract? If so, maybe 1 drop of EO? These look yummy!! Will have to try them.

  2. Abby says:

Okay, they're on the "to make" list. I love the way you provide the recipes in such a concise and printable format. Thank you!

  3. Nicki says:

Terry, I had the same thought about the EO. I am going to start with about 5 drops per teaspoon of extract and work up to taste.

  4. Kaissa says:

Made these, only I didn't have orange extract, so I used mint instead. They turned out AMAZING!! Can't wait to try the orange variety. Check out the link to my blog to make them gluten-free: http://karissawagner.blogspot.com/2013/12/mint-chocolate-brownies.htmlThanks Six Sisters for another amazing recipe! I think half the recipes on my blog are from you, I just adjust them to make them gluten-free and I haven't had any that didn't turn out great!

  5. Talia says:

I did use a different recipe For the brownie base, but I used the orange frosting and chocolate ganache on top. It tasted very good, however there was a spelling error in the ingredients. It says "3 cups powdered milk" in the ingredients, however later in the instructions it says powdered sugar.
