OVERVIEW

Dr. Richard Urso graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, where he was on the Dean's Distinguished Honor Roll. He then went on to study medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Urso was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while studying there. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas and then concluded with a fellowship in Oculoplastics and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In 1993, Dr. Urso was appointed Ophthalmologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he served until April 2005. During this time, he was also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.Dr. Urso is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the North American …Academy of Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery. He is also a member of the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Ophthalmic Association. Dr. Urso has also written numerous articles and abstracts relating to a variety of topics in the field of ophthalmology.His honors include Outstanding Teacher in Ophthalmology from UT-Houston Medical School-Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Hero Award, Dedication and Service Award from Harris County Fraternal Order of Police #39, and America's Top Ophthalmologist in Oculoplastics, Reconstructive Surgery, and Refractive Surgery.Dr. Urso and his wife, Stacy, are heavily involved with the West University Softball Associates and Little League. They have six wonderful children, Alessandra, Ellie, Catherine, Joey, Anthony, and Isabella.

"Poor customer service. Long wait times in their office. Never received return calls from staff even after 3 weeks and 4 voicemails left. Charged my insurance for extra test in order to get a surgery scheduled but yet staff will not schedule or communicate about surgery. Do not recommend."

"I was an E.R. patient in 1999, and staff had me wait all day for Dr. Urso to come down from his practice. I decided to call a plastic surgeon who I trusted to come to the E.R. after his appointments. Long story short, Dr. Urso argued he had the better experience to perform the elective occuplasty on the blow out fracture because he repaired Hakeem Olajuan's blow out fracture. Years later, I found out he lied by discovering a news article describing the basketball star's injury. It stated a different surgeon had performed the repair at Park Plaza Hospital in 1991. I believe he also lied when he declared I needed a second surgery because (his words) "my eye muscle tissue was sticking to the implant and he needed to add Teflon." In the news article about Olajuwan's repair in 1991, it described use of a Teflon plate. So if the standard of care for blowout fractures was to insert a Teflon plate, why had Dr. Urso done otherwise? He also feigned he didn't know about diplopia treatments ...

"Dr Urso is fantastic. He is extremely skilled and would recommend him for any eye issues. His office is busy so there is usually a wait (and sometimes long) but just make sure you have your phone charged or bring a book. I don’t mind waiting to see him."
