H. G. Wells

"

Born Herbert George Wells in Kent in 1866, H. G. Wells was an outspoken socialist and pacifist, whose works caused some controversy. He is more widely known as a science fiction writer for the novels that he published between 1895 and 1901: The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, When the Sleeper Wakes and The First Men in the Moon. All, except for When the Sleeper Wakes, have been made into films.

Along with Jules Verne, H. G. Wells is also known as 'the Father of Science Fiction'.

His later novels were more realistic and he wrote many genres, including contemporary novels, history and social commentary.

H. G. Wells died in 1946.

Samenvatting

In 'What is Coming? A Forecast of Things after the War', H. G. Wells embarks on an ambitious venture of prognostication, undeterred by the then-ongoing global convulsion of World War I. The work is characterized by Wells's trademark fusion of sharp intellect and lucid prose, positioned at the intersection of social commentary, speculative exploration, and a keen interest in the societal trajectory. This book is a testament to Wells's fearless engagement with the possible outcomes of rapid technological progress and geopolitical shifts. It stands in literary conversation with his well-known speculative novels but delves deeper into nonfiction analysis, illuminating the hopeful and the harrowing potentialities of the future in equal measure.nHerbert George Wells was not simply a writer of fiction; his expansive intellect and insatiable curiosity about the world led him to explore ideas deeply rooted in the scientific and political zeitgeists of his time. His experience as a futurist thinker, coupled with his engagement with contemporary cultural and social concerns, gave him a unique vantage point from which to consider the consequences of war and the shape of peace to come. 'What is Coming?' reflects his ongoing preoccupation with the role of science and technology in shaping human destiny and his profound concern for the welfare of humanity at a tipping point in history.nThe prophetic vision presented in 'What is Coming?' will captivate readers who appreciate historical foresight paired with intellectual rigor. Scholars and enthusiasts of early 20th-century literature will find Wells's insights into the post-war era prescient and his analyses thought-provoking. While the future may have diverged in manifold ways from what Wells predicted, the value of this book lies not only in its predictions but also in its encapsulation of the hope and uncertainty at a critical juncture of human history. It is essential reading for those who seek to understand the mindset of an era poised on the cusp of great transformation.
